In 2022, I received the Honorable Mention in Graduate Fiction award at the 60th Glendon & Kathryn Swarthout Awards, judged by author Amber Sparks, for my science fiction short story “The Death of a Martian.” This was the first fiction work I completed since my childhood, and it signals my re-emergence as a creative fiction writer. The story follows the last days in the life of an astronaut, the fictional first person on Mars, and the loss of possibility coming to a close.
